Community Leaders & Gardens
Gardens play a major role in supporting the poor. Gardening is a skill and an art. Gardening is a wonderful way of communicating with God. No one knows that better than the people of Mariannridge.
The earliest garden project was started by the Grasshooper Club in the eighties. Aunty Lizzie; Aunty Mary; Aunty Molly and others transformed the open space to a living experience of growing vegetables and fruit. It became a place for women to gather and to share and a place for friendships to be built. Speak to a “grasshopper” and they can tell you stories of their experiences for hours on end.
In the stories will come up names like Jill and Pinetown Child Welfare. People and agencies will who have long given support to community of Mariannridge.
If you come to Mariannridge today – you will find gardens at the clinic and the Catholic Church. In the open spaces around the flats, in the library and even on our corridors at school, everybody is putting down a seed to get food. (click on MCC projects to see how green our community has become)
